Mozart was not killed by Salieri as he likely died from a kidney infection given the symptoms he had and the length of the illness. There was even an opera and a novel written about it, which served as the basis for Peter Schaffer's play the 1984 film is adapted from.

Mozart would have likely overshadowed Salieri if Mozart had not died at age 35, although the rumors of Salieri poisoning Mozart that spread after Mozart's death did a lot to bring attention to Mozart. When a grown made composed symphonies and operas, it was nothing special.

Audiences of that time often failed to notice Mozart's genius because they still expected a child prodigy and the spectacle of it. In reality Salieri was much more successful and famous during his lifetime than Mozart. The sets are magnificent (I think it was all filmed on location in Prague), the supporting cast is great (with the possible exception of Mozart's wife Stanzi), and the music.well, the music speaks for itself. Tom Hulce kills it as Mozart, with his pink wigs and immature demeanor and his outrageous laugh, but the film really belongs to Abraham. Murray Abraham's performance as Salieri stood out to me the most: he's mediocre and he knows it, but he still knows great music when he hears it and it drives him mad knowing that Mozart - this impudent and brash rock star of a child - creates these incredible compositions with such ease. Miloš Forman crafted a beautiful, heartbreaking, and occasionally laugh-out-loud hilarious ode to the greatest composer of the classical era and the struggle of creating art.
#Amadeus full movie movie
I remember seeing it a long time ago when I was a kid and I thought it was pretty good, but I just recently rewatched it for the first time in nearly 20 years and HOLY SHIT this movie is just phenomenal.
